Trying HYROX for the first time can feel like a bigger step than it actually is. You may have seen race clips online, heard people talk about sled pushes and wall balls, or wondered whether you need to be in better shape before joining a class.
At NXT Level Fitness, you don’t need to show up already knowing how HYROX works. Our HYROX classes in Hillsboro are coach-led sessions built around strength, cardio, technique, and pacing, with options for different fitness levels.
Your first class is about getting familiar with the training, learning how the movements work, and seeing how HYROX fits into your own fitness goals. You also don’t need to be registered for a race to participate. If you’re interested in HYROX but aren’t sure what to expect, this guide will walk you through the experience before you step into the gym.
HYROX Training Is Not the Same as Racing

HYROX training helps beginners practice movements, pacing, and effort before race day.
HYROX is a fitness race that alternates eight 1-kilometer runs with eight functional workout stations. Those stations include activities such as sled pushes, rowing, and wall balls.
A training class is different from the event itself. Our HYROX sessions are 60-minute, coach-led workouts combining functional strength and cardio. Think of class as a place to practice the movements and learn how to manage your effort, rather than a race you must already be prepared to finish.
We are an official HYROX Training Club, but a race entry is not a requirement to train with us.
Already thinking further ahead? Our HYROX race preparation guide covers that next step. For now, let’s focus on getting you through the door.
Your First Visit: Five Things to Focus On

Your first HYROX class is easier when you meet your coach, learn the movements, and ask questions.
You don’t need to memorize exercise names before coming in. Use these five pointers to help you ask useful questions and get more comfortable with the HYROX experience.
Meet Your Coach
Introduce yourself and let your coach know it’s your first HYROX class. Share what exercise you have been doing and any movements you are uncertain about. “I have never used a sled” is useful information, not something to apologize for.
Get Oriented
Before starting, make sure you know where to be, which equipment is part of the workout, and how to follow the instructions. Ask us ahead of your visit when to arrive and whether anything needs to be completed before class.
Learn the Movements
Treat unfamiliar equipment as something to learn, not something you should already understand. Ask for another explanation when a setup or movement is new. You do not need to pretend an instruction makes sense just because someone nearby has started.
Train With Guidance
Our sessions include coaching on technique and pacing. Use that support instead of trying to copy another person’s effort. Ask what you should focus on and which option is appropriate for your starting point.
Wrap Up With a Question
Before leaving, think about one movement that feels clearer and one question you still have. Ask your coach what to focus on next time. Learning how to approach the workout is a worthwhile first-class achievement.
Meet the Equipment

HYROX training equipment includes tools like sleds, rowers, SkiErgs, and wall balls.
Our HYROX training equipment includes sleds, rowers, SkiErgs, and wall balls. Here is a quick introduction. Note that not all equipment may appear in your first workout.
Sled: A Platform You Move Across the Floor

Sled training helps HYROX beginners learn pushing, pulling, setup, and movement control.
A sled holds weights and travels along the floor. HYROX includes both sled pushing and sled pulling. Before starting, ask your coach about the setup and how to approach the movement.
Rower: A Seated Cardio Machine

Rowing builds endurance, coordination, and pacing for HYROX training and race preparation.
A rower has a sliding seat, footrests, and a handle. The rowing movement brings your legs, body, and arms together in sequence. It is not simply a matter of pulling harder with your arms.
SkiErg: Skiing Motion, No Snow Required

SkiErg training improves endurance, power, and full-body coordination for HYROX athletes.
A SkiErg is an upright machine with two handles that you pull downward. The movement is based on cross-country skiing and involves more than your arms.
Wall Ball: A Squat and a Throw

Wall ball training builds strength, coordination, and movement control for HYROX athletes.
A wall ball is a weighted ball used in a movement combining a squat with a throw toward a target. The name describes the equipment, but learning the movement is where coaching can help.
How Beginner HYROX Training Meets You Where You Are

Beginner HYROX training helps you build confidence, improve technique, and progress at your own pace.
You don’t need to walk into your first HYROX class knowing every movement or piece of equipment. Some exercises may feel familiar right away, while others will take a little practice. That’s completely normal.
Our coaches are there to help you understand the movements, find a pace that makes sense, and adjust the workout when needed. If you’re unsure about something, ask. The goal isn’t to keep up with the person next to you. It’s to learn the workout, train with good form, and leave feeling more confident than when you walked in.
Bring These Basics
Keep your first-class packing list simple:
- Comfortable workout clothing that lets you move freely.
- Suitable training shoes for strength and cardio.
- Water to have with you during the session.
There’s no need to buy a whole new workout wardrobe. Start with the basics, and check with our team about any footwear questions or additional requirements before your visit.
Still have something you’d like to ask before booking? Talk with our team about class times, your current training, or the part of HYROX you’re unsure about.
Questions Before You Book A HYROX Class
1. Can I Attend My First HYROX Class on My Own?
Yes. You can book an individual HYROX drop-in and join our coached group training. You don’t need to organize a team or find a training partner first. Let us know you’re new when you arrive. Our community is built around training together and supporting each other, so coming on your own doesn’t mean figuring everything out on your own.
2. Which NXT Level HYROX Booking Should I Choose for My First Class?
Choose HYROX Training Club – Drop-In Class Registration to try a regular coached session. A HYROX Simulation is a separate race-style event, so it isn’t the same booking. Before purchasing your drop-in, confirm the upcoming class time with our team and mention that it will be your first visit. That helps you plan for the right session rather than accidentally registering for an event.
3. How Can I Tell Whether HYROX Training Is a Good Fit for Me?
After your first class, consider whether you enjoyed the mix of strength and cardio, found the coaching helpful, and felt comfortable asking questions. You don’t need to love every exercise or feel confident with every station to be interested in coming back. Tell us what you enjoyed and what felt unfamiliar so we can talk through what you’d like to work on next.
